New Song: Scotty, We're Coming for You

Posted on March 15, 2011 with 12 comments

We have a new song posted!

(The following comments are also on the song page, but I wanted to give the opportunity to comment here.)

I wrote this song after a long day of protesting at the capitol followed by another rally of sorts at the Barrymore Theater that evening. Speakers at that event included Matt Rothschild of the Progressive Magazine, U.S. Rep Tammy Baldwin, and Texas rabble rouser Jim Hightower. One day after this song was written, we performed it at our regular stomping grounds, The Malt House in Madison.

Inspired by the hundreds of thousands of people who have been protesting in Madison, in Wisconsin and around the U.S., I wanted to contribute in my own way to the movement. I wanted to write a song about not only our anger, but also the amazing solidarity we've seen among such a hugely diverse group of people. But I also didn't want to just reminisce. I wanted a call to action.

This song is for you.

Please download it and share it. If you're a musician, feel free to play it. Or if you know some musicians, please share it with them (for the chords download for Word or as a PDF). If you'd like it to reflect the recall effort in your district, please feel free to replace "Scotty" with the name of your senator (i.e. Luther, Glenny, Alberta, Mary, Danny, Sheila, Bobby, Randy, we're coming for you")

We will win, because the people have the power.

Solidarity,

Can we use this for our efforts in Michigan? Of course, there will have to be some changes to reflect our state, but overall I think it represents our efforts to rid ourselves of tyranny. Thank you.

SHARED!!! I live in Arkansas but grew up in northern Illinois--and am soooo grateful for and proud of the good people of the state of Wisconsin for ROUSING the sleeping giant!! I too was baffled that no one had revolted until now...Praise god the fight started in Wisconsin--you are an example for the rest of the country. ♥ ON WISCONSIN!!

Love it! My daughter and I visited my sister in Madison March 11-14. Got to join in the rally and see the St. Pattys day parade. (So i love the bagpipes:also my son is a musician and one thing he plays is the accordian!!so you guys must rock!)I live outside of St. Louis,MO but I have been visiting Madison regularly since my sister moved there in 1982, and I love the town. It was great to be there as WI makes history and started everyone standing up against the fascists (yes, that's what they ARE!) and every movement needs good music! Thanks for sharing it with us! Love and peace to you all!

I love it! Thanks again for joining our float in the St. Patrick's Parade on Sunday - the crowd loved this! We've posted it on our facebook (and my personal) and sent it out far and wide through work and friends. Action is the key...cuz we outnumber 'em! See you tonight at the High Noon!

Well done lads. I'm learning it tonight and playing it tomorrow with Mr. Blink at the Alpine Inn, La Crosse. I'll make sure and let the crowd now about your gig next week at Nighthawks. Thanks for the lyrics and chords.

A true melodic depiction of the atrocity taking place in Wisconsin! Divide and conquer the middle class while the fat cats slither to the top and reap the spoils of their victory! SHAME indeed! One small note: Teachers wear RED for Public ED! Thanks so much for hearing our passioned cries and using you talent to create poetry out of this chaos! I hope to hear you perform this at the High Noon tomorrow night in Madison!

I sent a link to the song to National radio host Thom Hartmann. I thought your song hit the nail on the head and more people should hear it. Cheers

This is the awesomest song in the entire world. I'm so glad it's not called "Scotty we're real mad but what would people think if we did anything too scary?"

Awesome song. Made me tear up a bit. I love what's happening here but, man, do I hate why it's happening. Solidarity and fingers crossed. We will win!
